Zaragoza has officially become one of the host cities for the 2030 World Cup, following the validation of the candidacy by FIFA. With this announcement, the city joins the select group of cities that will host matches in the most important tournament in international football.

From Madrid, the Mayor of ZaragozaNatalia Chueca, has highlighted the importance of this World Cup, unique in its kind as it is being held in three countries (Spain, Portugal and Morocco): ” Zaragoza will be part of such a special and unique World Cup, which is great news for our city and for the whole of Spain ,” said the Mayor, underlining the positive impact this will have at a local and national level.

One of the key pillars in achieving this designation has been the project for the new La Romareda stadium, designed to meet all FIFA specifications. According to the mayor, this venue will be “one of the most modern and sustainable in the country” and will allow Zaragoza to host matches up to the round of 16.

The estimated economic impact exceeds 300 million euros, although the final figure is expected to be even higher, said Chueca, who added that the construction of the stadium and infrastructure improvements, such as air connections, are already underway thanks to the collaboration between the City Council, the Government of Aragon and AENA.

Although the stadium is the priority, Zaragoza faces other challenges, such as improving transport connections, especially at the airport, and defining the resources and support it will receive from the Government of Spain and the High Council of Sports. The mayor has assured that the city has a clear roadmap to coordinate these efforts over the next six years. “It is a great opportunity for Zaragoza and for the people of Zaragoza to once again rise to the occasion,” she said.
