The train accident in Ademuz ( Córdoba ) is still fresh in the collective memory, and this Tuesday, a new incident on the tracks has once again raised concerns. A Rodalies commuter train derailed in the Barcelona municipality of Gelida after a retaining wall near the tracks collapsed as a result of the storm affecting Catalonia, causing the death of one person and injuring 37, according to Civil Protection.
A Renfe spokesperson told Servimedia that it is not yet clear whether the deceased was the train driver, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Emergency medical services have arrived at the scene to treat the injured,
five of whom are in serious condition.
In addition, the Civil Protection of Catalonia explained that 38 fire crews with 70 personnel have been activated, as well as 20 ambulances to transport the injured.
It is a train on the R4 line that departed from Sant Vicenç de Calders at 18:55 and was due to arrive in Manresa at 21:57.
Adif suspended service across the entire Rodalies commuter rail network, after initially doing so between Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and Martorell Central. Renfe offered alternative transportation to affected passengers.
Renfe has deeply regretted this death and has conveyed its “deepest condolences to his family and loved ones”, as well as its full support to the injured and affected people.
