From the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the acting president of Aragon , Jorge Azcón , hailed Amazon Web Services’ billion-euro announcement on Monday as ” historic news .” This came just minutes after the technology company revealed in Barcelona its intention to double its investment in Aragon from €15.7 billion to €33.7 billion , building up to three new data centers and an associated server manufacturing and repair facility.

According to the acting head of the Aragonese government, this is the “best economic news in the country in decades,” as it is “unparalleled” by anything else. “If we combine it with other investments from other technology companies, it marks a turning point for Aragon . The total investments being processed in Aragon amount to 90 billion euros in less than three years. The impact this will have on Aragon will extend throughout Spain ,” proudly declared Jorge Azcón, who specified that the jobs to be generated—directly, indirectly, and indirectly—will exceed 30,000 full-time positions. “The new server factory will mean the creation of 1,800 stable, well-paid jobs with future prospects,” he added.

At the same time, he confirmed that one of the chosen locations will be La Puebla de Híjar, information first reported weeks ago by Heraldo de Aragón and which ARAGÓN DIGITAL was able to confirm with sources close to the project. “This is doubly good news. We are already processing multi-billion euro investments in the three provinces ,” Azcón affirmed, emphasizing that these processes are already underway and that future expansions will depend on the resolutions of the energy tenders that have been stalled “for months and months.”

Specifically, this second expansion plan, which will increase AWS’s investment from €15,700 to over €33,000, will allow for the construction of three new data centers . These will be in addition to the three already operating since 2022 (Villanueva de Gállego, El Burgo, and Huesca ) and the five included in the first expansion in Villanueva, Huesca , El Burgo, Zaragoza , and La Sotonera.

It is estimated that the total planned investment (33.7 billion in total) will contribute 31.7 billion euros to Spain’s total GDP until 2035 , supporting the equivalent of 29,900 full-time jobs on average per year in local companies, including direct, indirect and induced jobs.

Of these, 6,700 are full-time jobs resulting from Amazon’s direct investment across multiple categories, including highly skilled data center operations personnel and employees of AWS suppliers, such as facility construction workers and data center security staff, among others. Supply chain-related facilities, which will directly support data center operations in Spain and Europe, will generate approximately 1,800 permanent jobs in Aragon during the OPEX (operational expenditure) phase.
