The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation reacted swiftly on Thursday, urgently summoning Dana Erlich, the chargé d’affaires and head of the Israeli Embassy in Spain . This action follows the Israeli Navy’s detention of a flotilla bound for Gaza , on which Spanish citizens were traveling.
Sources from the department headed by José Manuel Albares explained that Dana Erlich “has been urgently summoned” to convey “the strongest condemnation for the detention of the flotilla”, in which there were Spaniards.
FLEET DETENTION
The detainees, approximately 175 people of various nationalities, had departed from Barcelona. After a stopover in Italy, they were sailing towards the Gaza Strip when they were intercepted in waters near Crete.
The Ministry has stated that both the Spanish embassy and consulate in Israel, along with the delegations in the area and the Consular Emergency Unit, “are fully operational and in contact with the organizers of the flotilla . ”
DIPLOMATIC CONTACTS
Meanwhile, the same sources have indicated that Minister Albares is holding talks with other foreign ministers from countries whose citizens were also traveling in the flotilla.
