On August 12, 2026 , Europe will experience an exceptional astronomical event when a total solar
eclipse crosses part of the continent, making Spain one of the prime locations for observing the phenomenon. The
eclipse will also be visible from Greenland, Iceland, and small areas of northeastern Portugal, while other parts of Europe will be able to see a partial solar eclipse.

And for the international broadcast of this eclipse, the European Space Agency has chosen Aragon. Specifically, the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory will host this international broadcast.

The broadcast will be available live on the European Space Agency’s website and via YouTube, and will be hosted by renowned scientist and space communicator Dame Dr. Maggie Aderin. In addition, a panel discussion will bring together experts to explain the science behind the phenomenon and its relevance beyond astronomical observation. Among the panelists will be Professor Carole Mundell, ESA’s Director of Science.

The European Space Agency leads solar and space research developed from Europe, including three space missions that study the Sun and its interaction with Earth, such as Solar Orbiter, Smile, and Proba 3.

FIRST TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE VISIBLE FROM SPAIN SINCE 1905

During the upcoming eclipse, Spain will have the largest path of totality in Europe, offering exceptional viewing conditions as the eclipse crosses the country from west to east and continues over the Balearic Islands. This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1905, and the first of three solar eclipses visible from the country between 2026 and 2028.
