Zaragoza has been recognized by Google as one of the most prominent cities on the international scene in technological innovation applied to public management. Mayor Natalia Chueca participated in the annual Google I/O meeting, held at the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, Silicon Valley.
At this global event, which showcases Google’s most significant innovations in areas such as Android, artificial intelligence, the web, and the cloud, Chueca participated in an international panel alongside other municipal leaders, reinforcing the Aragonese capital’s position as a European benchmark in the application of technology to improve citizen services.
During her speech on the panel “Driving a New Era of Government Innovation,,” moderated by Google Vice President Chris Turner, the mayor detailed the projects Zaragoza is developing in collaboration with the company, highlighting in particular the use of generative artificial intelligence to optimize administrative processes and improve the quality of public services.
ZARAGOZA, THE ONLY EUROPEAN CITY PRESENT AT THIS EVENT

Chueca emphasized that Zaragoza is the only European city present on the panels at this event, highlighting its pioneering role in the digital transformation of local governments. In his words, the city has become an example of how technology can be used at the service of citizens.
In addition to international recognition, Zaragoza’s participation in Google I/O strengthens its strategic relationship with the technology company. Last November, Vice President Turner visited the city and signed a collaboration agreement with the City Council for the development of digital tools aimed at sustainability, with a special focus on reducing emissions. One of the projects already underway, “Rooftop Solar Potential“, uses artificial intelligence to identify suitable roofs for installing solar panels, enabling progress toward a greener and more efficient city.
The mayor also took advantage of her participation in the forum to project Zaragoza’s image as a smart, climate-neutral city. During the panel, she stated that her goal is to transform Zaragoza into “the Silicon Valley of Europe“, highlighting the impact of technological innovation in areas such as mobility, energy efficiency, and citizen participation. Chueca’s presentation generated considerable interest among the attendees, who positively valued the digital transformation model implemented in the city.
DIGITALIZATION OF ZARAGOZA’S CULTURAL HERITAGE
In parallel with this collaboration, the City Council has promoted various training initiatives in emerging technologies. Through the Etopia center, more than 230 university professors have received training in generative artificial intelligence, with the aim of expanding their knowledge of these tools in the educational and professional fields. These initiatives are part of Zaragoza’s commitment to leading the responsible adoption of disruptive technologies and fostering a local ecosystem prepared for the challenges of the future.
Another area in which Zaragoza works together with Google is the dissemination of its cultural heritage. Thanks to the Google Arts & Culture platform, the city has digitized and made available to the world more than 500 high-quality images and 40 videos from the collections of Caesaraugusta and sculptor Pablo Gargallo. This initiative allows the city’s artistic and historical wealth to be recognized internationally, reinforcing its position as a leading cultural destination both within and outside Europe.
