19.2 % of the total investment in the ” Green It Aragón ” project, with which Samca will deploy three data centers on land in Luceni, Rueda de Jalón, Plasencia de Jalón, and Pedrola, in the province of Zaragoza, will go toward the renewable energy parks that will power the complex. This represents 504.5% of the 2.627 billion euros announced at the presentation by the Aragonese company at the end of last April. The portion allocated to the data centers will reach 2.069 billion, and the remaining 53.5% will come from the electricity, gas, water, and communications infrastructure.
According to the project’s Declaration of General Interest, published this Monday in the Official Gazette of Aragon, Samca will invest 59 million euros in renewable energy in 2028 and 2029, and 116 million euros in 2030, the end of the first generation phase. The final 209 million euros will be invested in 2033, at which point the facilities are expected to be fully operational.
The initial stage will involve upgrading five wind farms: Atalaya and El Bayo (up to 49.5 megawatts), Los Monteros (22.5), La Serreta (49.5), and Los Visos (36). These projects will involve replacing the existing wind turbines with “state-of-the-art, much higher-power” turbines, which will reduce the total number from 251 to 49, an 80% reduction . According to the company, “bird protection systems with artificial vision detection and selective shutdown” will also be installed.
On the other hand, a new wind-photovoltaic plant will be built for self-consumption with surplus energy and battery storage. It will be called the “Ribera Alta del Ebro Data Center” and will have a capacity of 35.5 megawatts. In total, the upgrades and this new facility will allow for a total of 242.2 MW, with a renewable production of 743 gigawatts per year.
Regarding the second phase, the largest investment, it will involve the hybridization of the Atalaya wind farm with another 30-megawatt photovoltaic module and another 22.5-megawatt battery installation. The same will occur with El Bayo (same figures), while La Serreta will reach, using the same mechanism, 30 megawatts of installed capacity and identical battery numbers. El Tollo will also be connected to another 45-megawatt solar plant, plus another five.
Furthermore, plans are underway to expand the battery storage capacity of the El Tollo (30 megawatts) and Los Monteros (13.5 megawatts) hybrid plants. The total capacity will reach 328 megawatts (147.5 megawatts via batteries) , with a renewable production capacity of 294 gigawatts per year.
16 PLOTS OCCUPIED
The deployment of the data centers will require the modification of three substations (Jalón PRE, Bayo, and Cantales) and the “doubling” of the so-called Camporroyo substation. Three 220-kilowatt power supply lines for industrial use will also be created from these points to the Samca complex. The intention is that “in order to avoid their environmental impact ,” they will be buried and run along public roads. The same is planned for the fiber optic networks and the pipeline that will connect to the Bilbao-Barcelona-Valencia gas pipeline , which runs through the area.
Work on the “Green It Aragón” project will require the occupation of up to 16 plots for a maximum of five years , with an optional two-year extension. Fourteen belong to the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, all of them in Luceni, and two to the city council , although the latter exceed 270,000 square meters.
THE REST OF THE INVESTMENT
Samca will invest €496 million next year and in 2027 : € 451.7 million in the data centers and €27 million in the electricity, gas, water, and communications connections. €404 million has been earmarked for 2028 (€344.8 million, the first €59 million in renewables), €59 million (for the wind farms alone) in 2029, and €937 million in 2030 (€820 million for the data campus and €116 million for energy).
2031 is shaping up to be the only year in the schedule without investment. Finally, 2032 will have 43 million, all in power generation, and 2033 will have 209 million, the second phase.
EMPLOYMENT
Company officials and President Jorge Azcón estimated job creation at 2,300. Documentation associated with the DIGA now places that number as the maximum total and 1,690 as the lowest. Thus, during the development works (access from the A-68, the interior of the complex, etc.), 800 direct jobs and between 560 and 1,050 indirect jobs will be created.
The construction of the data centers will generate 190 jobs and 140 to 260 jobs, while the operational and maintenance phase of the complex will generate between 260 and 320 jobs in total. Of these, 150 are direct jobs and 90 to 150 are indirect jobs. Finally, jobs at the renewable energy facilities account for ten positions of each type.
