Zaragoza was recognized this Thursday, for the second consecutive year, as one of the 112 leading cities in the fight against climate change worldwide. The international organization CDP-ICLEI has once again included the Aragonese capital on its prestigious A List, which gives the highest score to local governments’ commitments and progress in sustainability and climate action.
This distinction places Zaragoza among only three Spanish cities—along with Madrid and Barcelona —that have made it onto this select list. The CDP-ICLEI report highlights that the cities included adopt, on average, four times more measures to address climate change than those not on the list. The 2024 edition also includes major cities such as London, Paris, New York, and Tokyo, reinforcing the importance of the recognition.
Zaragoza City Council has been particularly praised for its comprehensive mitigation and adaptation strategy, based on initiatives such as the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the One Hundred Climate-Neutral Cities Mission , and the Climate Change Adaptation Plan. The electrification of public transport, with the transformation of the bus fleet and the addition of new trams, has been one of the notable milestones.
These advances are complemented by energy-efficient housing renovation programs, incentives for electric taxis, the expansion of charging stations for private vehicles, and urban renaturalization projects such as the Zaragoza Forest. Urban green management and the commitment to nature-based solutions reinforce the city’s commitment to sustainability.
To obtain this distinction, cities must have an emissions inventory, a public climate action plan, a risk assessment, and an adaptation strategy. Inclusion on List A will allow Zaragoza to monitor its progress, compare its performance with other cities around the world, and develop more effective policies toward climate neutrality.
