The Government of Aragon hosted events marking Europe Day this Friday in the Pignatelli Gardens . This May 9th, 80 years since the end of World War II, the Executive branch has not forgotten the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, on the doorstep of the Community, nor the role the Community can play in the common European project as a guarantor of “environments of coexistence , peace , and progress“.

This was stated by President Jorge Azcón, who called on the people of Aragon through an institutional declaration to “join forces” based on the culture of “pact” and the unique understanding of Aragon. In his speech, he also called for protecting the unity of a Spain that is part of the community and can guarantee public resources and security.

” Aragon will campaign for solidarity among its territories and against grievances,” Azcón stated. The regional government will seek to “promote actions to achieve social and territorial cohesion” and will also strive to uphold “institutional loyalty and good practices” from the executive branch to the city councils. Along the same lines, the leader of the DGA (General Directorate of General Administration) expressed his ” absolute rejection of any initiative that promotes ruptures or separatism ” and his “commitment to justice, solidarity, and human rights.”

The regional government’s Director General of Institutional Relations, Miguel Ángel Lafuente, stated that May 9th “is in itself an icon of peace.” He also defined “democracy, the rule of law, and popular sovereignty” as the cornerstones of the European Union.

“THE INJUSTICE OF WAR”

For his part, the director of the Peace Research Seminar FoundationJosé María Alemany, stated that “peace is a matter of supreme interest,” linked to the “richness of cultures, peoples, and languages” that make up the EU. “The injustice of war is rampant at the gates of our borders,” he lamented.

In the gardens of the Presidency of the Aragonese Government headquarters, various social organizations and groups have placed the stars of the European flag. These included Doctors Without Borders, the Gypsy Secretariat Foundation , Aspanoa , the María Auxiliadora Foundation , the Medina Albaida Secondary School, members of Ukrainian foster families , the Aragonese Federation of Municipalities, Regions and Provinces, the University of Zaragoza, and representatives of the DGA (General Directorate of General Administration of the Republic) itself.
