Zaragoza is preparing to take a decisive step in its tourism strategy to become the World Capital of Garnacha. To this end, the municipal councillor for Culture of the Zaragoza City Council , Sara Fernández, explained this Wednesday that the Aragonese capital will go hand in hand with the three Denominations of Origin (DO) of the province: Cariñena, Calatayud and Borja.
To this end, the City Council has reached an agreement with them and, together with the collaboration of public and private agents from Aragon, will work to promote wine tourism by promoting local gastronomy.
During the Culture Committee, Fernández announced that the agreement includes the creation of tourist routes that will have the wineries of these DOs as their main attractions, with Zaragoza serving as the “base camp” for visitors.
Fernández has highlighted the importance of Grenache as a native grape: “Of the five most important grape varieties in the world, Grenache is the only one that is both Aragonese and Spanish.” The events include the organisation of a World Grenache Festival and the holding of international meetings and congresses. In addition, the actions are intended to promote national and international wines to attract a greater number of tourists.
It was the Mayor of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca, who announced that Zaragoza will be the World Capital of the Garnacha Route during the State of the City Debate that took place last July. “Wine tourism is an upward trend, which is associated with quality tourism, which values culture, heritage and local gastronomy. And Garnacha is a native resource, originating in the province of Zaragoza, which results in top-level wines in the three wine denominations in our area: Calatayud, Campo de Borja and Cariñena,” she stressed.
