The best mountain, adventure and nature films are back for the fourth edition of the Pirineos Mountain Film Festival, in Huesca from 17 to 22 February. This annual film event began in 2022 in Huesca , focusing on films and short films related to sport and the environment. The aim of the festival is to reward productions that stand out for their quality in depicting sporting, adventure and natural environment themes, promoting values such as self-improvement, exploration and respect for nature. The official 2025 poster features a spectacular photograph of the southwest spire of Abadías and the Cregüeña lake in Benasque, protagonists of this event and signed by Juan R. Bielsa, JC Smolinos and Club Nabaín.

The selected screenings will be screened on the scheduled dates of the Festival in Huesca and evaluated by the jury. In addition, the short films received may be selected to form part of the travelling exhibition “Tour 2025”, which has already confirmed stops in towns such as Barbastro, Boltaña, Benasque and Tarbes. After touring these towns in Alto Aragón, the screenings will be extended to other cities both in Spain and internationally. “In a very short time, the festival has achieved very solid roots in the territory with the affection of the public, strong institutional support and last year it made the international leap. All this makes us look with optimism, ambition and responsibility towards 2025” says Asensio.

BEST SHORT FILM AWARD

Among the new features of this edition, a new award for the best short film shot in the Pyrenees is added to the existing awards:  Award for Best Short Film, worth 3,000 euros; Award for Best Adventure and Sports Short Film, with a reward of 1,500 euros; Award for Best Culture and Nature Short Film, with 1,500 euros; and the Awards for Best Animated Short Film, Best Screenplay, Audience Award and Award for Best Ibero-American Short Film. According to David Asensio, director of the event, it is “a way of bringing together the communities united by this mountain range that gives us our name: the Basque Country, Navarre, Aragon, Catalonia and France”.

The total amount of awards amounts to 6,000 euros and will be decided by a qualified jury. The prize money in each category will go directly to the filmmakers, and in the case of Best Screenplay, the award will be given to the screenwriter or screenwriters. The works nominated for the award can be seen free of charge at the sessions scheduled daily at the Teatro Olimpia.

REGISTRATION PERIOD OPEN UNTIL NOVEMBER 17

On the other hand, this year’s registration process can be done through the Festhome and Film Freeway platforms, with a period that will remain active until November 17. In addition, residents of geographical areas in conflict or with online payment restrictions can request their participation by email:  peliculas@pirineosmff.com . “We want to reach everyone and eliminate any type of barrier or difficulty that the authors of the works may encounter when exhibiting their proposals” says Asensio.

The artistic team thus begins the screening of works to complete a program on par with previous years when shorts such as the Spain-USA co-production “Into The Ice: An Expedition To The End Of The World” by Andrew Opila or the French “The Draconians” by Maxime Moulin have been awarded. The candidate works must be less than 30 minutes long and fiction, documentary and animation productions whose theme revolves around the central themes of the event may be accepted, excluding productions of an advertising or tourism nature.

Among the important technical details to take into account in this phase are the production date (after January 1, 2022), as well as the need to have subtitles in English or Spanish if the original language is any other than those mentioned above, something necessary so that the members of the pre-selection team can evaluate each and every one of the proposals received in a fair and equal manner. The complete rules can be consulted on the official website of the festival.
