The Monasterio de Piedra, one of the most emblematic destinations in Aragon, will officially reopen its complex, including the Historic Park-Garden, on March 22, after restoration work motivated by the damage caused by the flood at the end of October 2024.
Following the official reopening, a special open day will be held on 24 March , offering visitors the chance to obtain free tickets . Tickets can be purchased via the Monasterio de Piedra website, although due to limited capacity, it is recommended to book in advance.
RESTORATION WORKS
In recent months, the Monasterio de Piedra team has worked tirelessly to restore the accessibility structures damaged by the strong floods of the Piedra River. This damage affected key elements such as accesses, paths, walkways and furniture. The work, in which both Monasterio de Piedra staff and external companies have participated, has been carried out with the commitment to respect the natural environment and the historical heritage of the park, and has focused on the rehabilitation of everything that allowed visitors to enjoy this unique natural setting.
This ambitious project has involved not only the recovery of these infrastructures, but also a complete redesign of them, with the aim of being able to face future floods with the maximum possible guarantees. For this reason, every corner of the park has been evaluated to understand the way in which previous floods affected the environment. Stronger walls have been built at the main points of overflow of the river, specifically designed to withstand the force of the water. In addition, all the walkways that connected different areas of the park and that disappeared due to the aggressiveness of the DANA, have been replaced and reinforced appropriately to withstand future inclement weather.
TRANSFORMING NATURE
The force of nature has reconfigured certain elements of the Historic Garden Park and its main attractions are presented with a renewed majesty, while always maintaining their essence. The waterfalls and cascades, the lush vegetation and the karst landscape continue to be the protagonists. Therefore, visitors will be able to continue enjoying an enriching experience where the landscape, boosted by the meticulous restoration work, now offers an even more impressive and lively natural environment.
STONE MONASTERY, LOCAL ECONOMIC ENGINE
The losses in recent months due to the closure of the park and the lack of record of visits have been significant. This event has not only affected Monasterio de Piedra and its workers, but has also had a considerable impact on the Calatayud region in particular, and the province of Zaragoza in general. Monasterio de Piedra is an important economic driver for the Community and its return to activity becomes essential to reactivate tourism in the area and local employment, given that the influx of visitors not only benefits the park, but also boosts small businesses and services that depend on the sector.
THE RETURN TO NORMALITY OF THE MONASTERY OF PIEDRA
Once normal activity levels have been restored, the Monasterio de Piedra is expected to resume the planned activities to commemorate the bicentennial of the birth of Juan Federico Muntadas Jornet, the driving force and visionary of the Historic Garden Park, whose celebration will reach its climax in 2026.
In the words of José Pont, director of Monasterio de Piedra: “After the great challenge we have faced, we are very happy to be able to welcome visitors again and share with them the renewed beauty of this unique environment. We are extremely grateful for the effort and work of all those who have participated in the restoration, since their work has been fundamental in ensuring that the park recovers all its splendour, always respecting its historical and natural value.”
