The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation lists the restrictions for travelers from the EU on its website. Specifically, EU travelers will not be allowed to enter the United Kingdom with meat or dairy products for personal consumption. Those bringing these foods into the country will face fines of up to €5,800 and will be required to surrender them at the border.
The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has announced that, since April 12, travellers from the European Union are prohibited from entering the UK with beef, lamb, pork, or dairy products for personal consumption, in a bid to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
WHAT IS ANIMAL FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an infectious disease affecting a large number of species. It is caused by a virus of the Picornaviridae family, genus Aphtovirus, which includes seven immunologically distinct serotypes and numerous different subtypes. It is characterized by vesicular lesions on the mucous membranes and epithelium of cloven-hoofed species, both domestic and wild, affecting animals of all ages.
Morbidity is usually very high due to its high transmissibility, although mortality is generally low, affecting mainly very young animals. It is one of the most important viral diseases due to its widespread spread , the large number of species it affects, and the resulting production losses.
