Zaragoza has once again positioned itself among theworld’s most committed cities in the fight against climate change . The Aragonese capital was recognized in Paris as one of the 120 leading cities globally after being included, for the third time, on the CDP-ICLEI A List , the highest international ranking for climate action.
The Minister for the Environment and Mobility, Tatiana Gaudes , accepted this award, which recognizes Zaragoza for its sustainable policies and its commitment to reducing emissions and adapting to climate change. In total, more than 1,000 cities participated in this global report, which annually evaluates the environmental strategies of local governments.
Zaragoza is one of only three Spanish cities , along with Barcelona and Madrid, to be included on the 2025 A List . This list also includes other European cities such as Paris, Oslo, Rotterdam , and London, as well as global cities like New York, Johannesburg , Melbourne, and Tokyo. According to CDP-ICLEI, all of them stand out for generally adopting four times more climate action measures than cities not on the A List.
In the case of Zaragoza, its inclusion recognizes the strategy that the City Council is developing in terms of mitigation and adaptation through the commitments of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the Mission of One Hundred Climate Neutral Cities and the Climate Change Adaptation Plan.
Tatiana Gaudes explained that ” this award is directly related to many of the projects launched by the Government of Zaragoza, such as the promotion of the electrification of transport, both public and private, to reduce polluting emissions.”
The councilor also noted that ” with funding from European funds , Zaragoza is transforming its urban bus fleet and has acquired two new tram units that are already in service. Furthermore, it is incentivizing the purchase of electric taxis among professionals in the sector and has developed a network of charging points for private vehicles that is now fully operational.”
The Zaragoza City Council ‘s strategy to move towards climate neutrality by 2030 also includes the rehabilitation of homes to improve energy efficiency and climate comfort, the promotion of renewable energies and the renaturalization of the city, such as the regeneration of the Huerva riverbed or with projects for the creation of carbon sinks such as El Bosque de los Zaragozanos, as well as a comprehensive Urban Green management strategy based, fundamentally, on natural solutions.
