The European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) Pyrenees-Pyrenees , which includes the Autonomous Community of Aragon, the Provincial Council of Huesca, the Department of Hautes-Pyrénées and the Department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, whose rotating presidency is currently held by Councillor Octavio López, is asking the French State to organise a meeting with all cross-border representatives. The aim is to share the provisional solutions envisaged and to shorten the closure of the Somport cross-border route as much as possible.
The members of the EGTC are speaking to the French Government in unison and with one voice, stating that it is vital that this route can be reopened as soon as possible. The members of the EGTC are also warning of the problem of secondary border crossings, which will be weakened as a result of the collapse of the RN 134 on the French side.
The AECT, responsible for all coordination actions necessary for the management of the Portalet and Bielsa Aragnouet border crossings, is concerned about secondary crossings and the obvious risks to traffic during the winter period, as well as the impact on cross-border projects underway.
As a group involved in the economic and tourist development of the valleys, the AECT stresses that the announcement of a closure of the Somport pass for more than six months worries the representatives of Aragon. That is why the AECT shows its support to the stakeholders of the valleys in this difficult moment and is studying the adoption of the most appropriate solutions.
The Government of Aragon is in direct contact with the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, which has been offered the necessary support to speed up the reopening of this cross-border crossing.
