The Gallocanta Lagoon Directed Nature Reserve is preparing to welcome, in the coming months, the arrival of thousands of cranes from northern Europe. The arrival of cold weather and the reduction in hours of sunshine mark the beginning of migration for these birds, which find in Gallocanta a good refuge to rest and feed before continuing their long journey to warmer areas in the south of the Peninsula where they will spend the winter months.
The post-nuptial migratory passage is one of the most anticipated natural phenomena in our Community. According to the official census of the Government of Aragon, only between the months of October and December 2023, more than 104,000 cranes passed through Gallocanta. A spectacle that attracts thousands of ornithologists, photographers and nature lovers every year.
To bring this event closer to the general public, the Interpretation Centre of the Gallocanta Lagoon Directed Nature Reserve is launching its popular guided tours around the lagoon. Under the name “On the road with the cranes” , the activity covers this Singular Wetland under the guidance of an environmental educator, making observation stops at different strategic points.
A free experience promoted by the General Directorate of Environmental Education of the Government of Aragon that allows visitors to learn more about this emblematic species, its behaviour and its curiosities.
Last year more than 1,300 people participated in one of these visits and more than 7,000 passed through the Interpretation Centre located between the towns of Bello and Tornos.
The visits take place on weekends and holidays in two sessions, at 11:00 a.m. and at 3:30 p.m. A prior reservation is required through the website www.rednaturaldearagon.com to be able to make the visit.
