At least ten people have died and 25 have been injured in a shooting Tuesday at Tumbler Ridge High School in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Among the dead is the suspected shooter, who was found dead inside the school with a self-inflicted wound. The incident has shaken this small community of just 2,400 residents and has become the deadliest school shooting in the country in decades.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as reported by CNN, six of the victims were found dead inside the school. A seventh person died while being transported to the hospital, while the bodies of two other victims were located at a residence in the municipality that is believed to be connected to the events. Police have stated that they know the identity of the suspect but have not released it publicly, nor have they confirmed whether the suspect is a minor.
Officers arrived at the scene in less than two minutes after receiving the emergency call around 1:20 p.m. Hours later, they continued their investigation at various locations in the area to rule out the involvement of other individuals. Authorities have confirmed that at least two of the injured are in serious condition or with life-threatening injuries, while the rest are receiving medical attention for non-life-threatening wounds.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended much of his schedule for Wednesday following the tragedy. In a public statement, he said that “the nation is in mourning” and offered his condolences to the families. The Premier of British Columbia also expressed his dismay and pledged psychological support and assistance to the school community, while the school will remain closed for the rest of the week.
Authorities have declined to provide details about the attacker’s identity, age, or possible motives, stating they will work to clarify what happened. The country is thus reminded of other tragic events, such as the massacre at École Polytechnique in Montreal in 1989.
