It’s official: El Tubo is a Site of Tourist Interest in Aragon

El Tubo , the heart of tapas in Zaragoza , has finally achieved the recognition it has been waiting for. Its narrow streets, brimming with bars, century-old restaurants, and corners steeped in history, are a must-see for both locals and visitors to the Aragonese capital. Now, in addition to being one of the city’s great gastronomic symbols , this emblematic area has gained further accolades by officially becoming a Site of Tourist Interest of Aragon .

The Government of Aragon has approved this declaration following a request submitted last month by the Zaragoza City Council , an initiative spearheaded by Mayor Natalia Chueca . The resolution, which will be published shortly in the Official Gazette of Aragon , highlights that El Tubo constitutes “an authentic experience of local culture” and a deeply rooted space that concentrates much of the economic, social, and cultural life of the historic center. According to the mayor, this recognition underscores the cultural, urban, and gastronomic heritage of one of Zaragoza’s main hallmarks and one of its best calling cards for visitors.

A SPACE WITH MORE THAN A CENTURY OF HISTORY

The declaration also recognizes the historical value of a space with over a century of history, located between streets such as Mártires, Estébanes, Libertad, Cinegio, and Plaza Sas . The order emphasizes that El Tubo transcends its role as a hospitality district to become a genuine urban tourism product, capable of projecting a distinctive image of Zaragoza thanks to its blend of gastronomy, heritage, community, and atmosphere. Among its attractions are historic establishments like Casa Lac and El Plata , as well as an urban layout that preserves Roman, Mudéjar, and Modernist vestiges .

The recognition will also have a significant economic and promotional impact. El Tubo will be integrated into the official tourism promotion circuits of the Government of Aragon , strengthening its national and international profile. According to the El Tubo Business Association , the area generates more than 300 direct jobs and around 1,100 indirect jobs , with a turnover of nearly 20 million euros.

Its president, Emilio Peña , celebrated the distinction because it will allow for the promotion of renovation projects, such as improvements in paving, lighting and decoration, with the aim of consolidating El Tubo as one of the great urban gastronomic neighborhoods of Spain
