The Directorate General of Culture of the Government of Aragon has scheduled various activities to commemorate International Museum Day, celebrated on May 18, with events throughout the region’s museum network under the theme “The future of museums in constantly changing communities.”
In addition, the main institutional event will take place on Monday, May 19, at 11:30 a.m., in Teruel. The Aragonese government, the Teruel Provincial Council, and the City Council will organize a joint event at the Teruel Museum to commemorate the IMD.
All museums in the region will hold activities to complement International Museum Day. The three Aragonese provinces and the museums they host will hold an open day to bring culture to the general public.
PROVINCE OF TERUEL
The Juan Cabré Museum in Calaceite will host guided tours of the museum’s permanent collection for schoolchildren on Thursday, May 15, from 10:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., led by the institution’s director. The educational activity, aimed at schoolchildren at the Matarraña Elementary School, will last approximately 30 minutes. Participants will include 15 students aged 3 and 4; 14 students from 3rd and 4th grade; 16 students from 5th and 6th grade; 8 students aged 5; and 21 students from 1st and 2nd grade.
On Sunday the 18th, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., there will also be six free guided tours of the museum’s facilities and permanent collections, and visitors will also be able to visit the temporary exhibition of contemporary art by the painter Fernando Romero.
On Tuesday the 20th, at 10:30 a.m., the Dinópolis Foundation will hold the activity “The paleoenvironmental and paleofloristic setting where the dinosaurs of Castellote lived.” This educational session is organized in collaboration with the Castellote CRA and will take place at the Olea CRA facilities in this municipality.
Likewise, a guided tour, “Discover the Paleontological Laboratory of the Aragonese Museum of Paleontology,” is scheduled for Thursday, May 29. Led by members of the Dinópolis Foundation’s scientific and technical team, it will also include a workshop on paleontological molds and replicas.
Museums of Zaragoza
At the Iaacc Pablo Serrano, this Sunday, the 18th, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., the activity “How Does Art Sound?” will take place, part of the Open Space for Culture program, led by Bosque Anouk. The initiative, aimed at all audiences, allows visitors to discover the sonic dimension of art through various pieces in the museum.
At 11:00 a.m., a participatory tour, “Interludes of Words and Sounds in the Museum,” led by Mariano Lasheras and Miguel Ángel Fraile, will begin. It includes a visit to several spaces in the museum, including one of the reserved areas to learn about these spaces and their sounds.
An hour later, the visit “A Museum to Discover. The IAACC and its Collections” will begin. This guided tour of the museum’s collections will be led by Buisán-Gómez. The activity is recommended for all ages 12 and up. At the same time, the intergenerational activity “Art in the Shadows” will take place , aimed at families, led by Marian Recaj. At the Zaragoza Museum, on Sunday the 18th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., a guided tour with members of the Los Trabajos de Hércules Cultural Association has been scheduled for the museum’s section dedicated to the Roman city of Colonia Iulia Lepida / Celsa, in the municipality of Velilla de Ebro. This tour will allow visitors to explore the permanent exhibition and the archaeological remains of the site. To participate in this activity, prior registration is required , and a bus will depart from Zaragoza, from Paseo de la Mina, to the town.
HUESCA MUSEUM
At the Huesca Museum, the events will begin on Wednesday 14th, from 12:00 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 20:00, with “The Universe of Bronze”, an educational activity focused on experimental archaeometallurgy, designed and carried out by Archaeology and Didactics Start Up University of Zaragoza, which allows you to learn about bronze making techniques, following the procedures used in the second millennium BC. The activity is recommended for all audiences, from 8 years old, and lasts approximately two hours.
On Thursday the 15th, at 11:00 a.m., the exhibition “The Art of Gothic Architecture in the Crown of Aragon” will open. This photographic exhibition showcases the many connections between medieval architecture and the Western Mediterranean. It will be open from May 15th to September 14th.
Finally, on Sunday the 18th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the activity “An Ocean in the Museum” will take place for families and is taught by the Art Laboratory. Through a selection of pieces, from fountains to jars, visitors can discover the different ways water has been managed throughout history. This activity is especially recommended for children aged 4 and over and their families.
PEDAGOGICAL MUSEUM
At the Museo Pedagógico de Aragón, on Thursday the 15th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a historical calligraphy workshop will be held for adults, young people, and children aged 11 and over. It will be taught by Ricardo Vicente, from Aularium Estudio de Caligrafía in Binefar. The lowercase and uppercase alphabets will be presented, representing some of the types used in learning manuals from the last decades of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
The event, aimed at the general public, particularly teacher training students and members of the teaching community, will take place in the Palmira Plá Hall, upon prior registration. There will be two sessions, from 10:00 to 11:30 and from 12:00 to 13:30.
From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., you can attend the conference “The School as a Cultural Space: How Teaching Shapes Our Culture and Identity,” part of the Anthropology of Education Conference, led by anthropologist and cultural educator Dhara Izquierdo.
CDAN
The CDAN Art and Nature Center will host the “Living Gardens. Paper Gardens” conference on Friday, May 16. This event, organized by CDAN in collaboration with the Menéndez Pelayo International University and running from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., aims to reflect on the contributions to landscape design of French gardener Gilles Clément.
The event will continue on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and the exhibition “Gilles Clément. Paper Gardens” will open at 1:30 p.m. Curated by Carlos Ávila (University of Zaragoza), the exhibition explores the figure of the French landscape artist through a study of his notebooks. It will take place in Room 1 of the CDAN.
At the same time, the exhibition “Jardín de Tinta y Trazo” (Garden of Ink and Stroke) by Iara Chapuis and Marlen López will open in Room 2. The exhibition brings together a series of illustrated notebooks that invite us to contemplate biodiversity from an artistic perspective and to rediscover nature’s ability to inspire innovative, sensitive, and responsible solutions.
On Sunday the 18th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the CDAN will hold a plant pigment workshop, “The Colors of a Garden Through Its Botany.” This activity, led by Iara Chapuis and Marlen López, will allow participants to discover how to make inks from a variety of garden plants. At the end, each participant will take home their own palette made with pigments obtained from the CDAN garden.
