Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated unequivocally on Monday that the military bases at Morón de la Frontera (Seville) and Rota (Cádiz) are not providing any support to the United States in the context of the attack against Iran . Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the Defense Minister sought to dispel any doubts about the involvement of facilities located on Spanish territory.
“Absolutely, at the bases in Morón and Rota, no assistance whatsoever has been given to this type of action, to these types of attacks that are being carried out,” he stated to the media.
Robles noted that Spain has a bilateral agreement with the United States for the use of these facilities, but stressed that this agreement must always operate within the framework of international law. “This agreement must operate within the framework of international law, with international protection at some level, so that these actions can be carried out,” she explained.
In this regard, he stressed that the operations being carried out by Israel and the United States are being conducted “unilaterally, without the support of an international resolution,” and therefore, he indicated, the treaty does not apply in this scenario . “Consequently, they are not using those bases ,” he insisted.
The minister reiterated that the Spanish facilities will not carry out “any maintenance or support action” related to the offensive, and specified that they could only be activated if necessary from a humanitarian aid point of view and always under the protection of international law.
BET ON THE DIPLOMATIC ROUTE
Beyond the operational aspects, Robles advocated for a political solution to the conflict and expressed the government’s rejection of the escalation of hostilities. ” Violence, conflict, and death will never solve any problem ,” she stated.
In this context, she emphasized that Spain supports “diplomatic solutions” and an end to military operations. She also expressed her support for the Iranian people, especially the women. “We believe the Iranian people have the right to liberate themselves— I say this particularly for Iranian women—but it must be Iran that resolves its own problems,” she stated.
Robles also emphasized institutional respect for the United States as an ally, although she clarified that this does not imply support for actions lacking international backing. “ We have the utmost respect for the United States, but we understand that the treaty is not currently applicable ,” she concluded.
With this statement, the Government seeks to dispel any suspicion about a possible indirect involvement of Spain in the offensive and reaffirms its position of rejecting violence and defending the United Nations framework in any international intervention.
