Saica opts for European funds with a one hundred million project to decarbonize its production

The Saica company has designed a project to decarbonize its entire recycled paper process at its El Burgo de Ebro plant through an investment of 101.5 million euros that will create 440 direct and indirect jobs . The Aragonese multinational is applying for European funds through Perte and has already obtained the declaration of regional interest from the Government of Aragon , which will allow it to speed up deadlines and administrative procedures.

The investment consists of the development of a comprehensive decarbonization project , with six primary initiatives directly linked to the multinational’s paper manufacturing plant. This factory has three paper manufacturing machines, which produce 1.3 million tons per year of 100% recycled and recyclable paper for packaging. In addition, several actions are included whose objective is to achieve a comprehensive transformation in the energy strategy, through improving efficiency and reducing Natural Gas consumption.

The main actions are the start-up of a biomass energy generation plant, with a steam production of more than 700,000 tons per year; the implementation of a biomass preparation plant , which will treat 161,000 tons per year; the assembly of a backpressure steam turbine that will be placed in the current energy recovery plant and, finally, the start-up of a biogas boiler with the capacity to valorize the biogas generated in the waste water treatment and purification plant. factory.

From Saica they indicate that the commitment to the use of renewable energy occurs to the detriment of the final consumption of natural gas. Thus, emissions of 320,000 tons of CO2 will be reduced compared to 2022, which represents a 53% reduction in emissions thanks to the different energy solutions.
