The President of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, has traveled to Brussels for the European Committee of the Regions meeting , marking the start of his new term as head of the regional government. On Tuesday, he met with the European Commissioner for Startups, Ekaterina Zaharieva, and on Wednesday he participated in the presentation of the “Connecting Europe” Project 2028-2034.
From there, Azcón emphasized “the importance of the Pau-Canfranc- Zaragoza axis, whose recovery would mean reopening a strategic rail connection between Spain and France through the Pyrenees,” as well as promoting the Central Pyrenees Crossing as an additional connection between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe.
“Aragon welcomes the continuation and strengthening of the Connecting Europe Facility, an essential tool for improving the Union’s competitiveness, territorial cohesion, and strategic resilience. And from the autonomous community, we emphasize the importance of the reopening of the Pau-Canfranc-Zaragoza rail line ,” he stated.
According to the president, “this is a corridor with real logistical, industrial, and territorial potential, considering Zaragoza’s role as a connection hub with the Atlantic and Mediterranean corridors.” He added, “In the current geopolitical context, having robust, diversified, and fully operational transport networks is more necessary than ever.”
Jorge Azcón also reiterated the importance of “promoting the Central Pyrenees Crossing as an additional connection between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe, as the European Union needs more resilient networks with greater capacity and real alternatives in the face of saturations or interruptions.”
