The Minister of Housing, Development, Logistics and Territorial Cohesion of the Government of Aragon , Octavio López, announced this Thursday the creation of a specific management unit dedicated exclusively to promoting the Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor , one of the strategic infrastructures on which the regional government wants to strengthen its logistics commitment.
The new structure will be headquartered in Zaragoza and will report directly to the Department of Public Works. As López explained during the “Aragon, Logistics Hub” event, the management team will be comprised of professionals focused on defending the interests of Aragon and the other regions along the rail corridor, as well as expediting progress with the central government and the various administrations involved in this rail project.
” The Mediterranean Corridor has very powerful platforms and we have to be able to compete from the point of view of communication and comprehensive daily management,” López pointed out.
THE “DOUBLE LOGISTICS ARROW”
This initiative is part of the Government of Aragon’s strategy to strengthen the region’s role as a leading logistics hub in Europe. To this end, the regional government is developing the so-called “double logistics arrow ” strategy, aimed at enhancing and consolidating existing public platforms —PLAZA, PLHUS, PLATEA, Fraga, and Calamocha— and promoting new nodes capable of competing with other regions in the area.
Within this roadmap, López has outlined several initiatives to expand Aragon’s logistics capacity in various parts of the region. In Tarazona, a new logistics park will be developed to compete with Navarre and La Rioja.
In the Calatayud area, the second and third phases will be launched to compete with the Henares Corridor. In the Fraga area, the second phase is being intensified to attract traffic from Catalonia . In the Alcañiz area, the aim is to expand the land area to compete with the northern part of the Valencian Community.
PLAZA EXPANSION AND STRATEGIC PLAN
Another key element of this strategy involves expanding PLAZA in Zaragoza. The logistics platform currently covers 13 million square meters and is practically full, so the Government of Aragon is already exploring various options to gain more space.
The councilor announced that they are working on different options to carry out this expansion by developing the land surrounding the current platform. This will be aided by the construction of key infrastructure projects, such as the Turiaso Bridge , whose works have just begun and which represent a direct investment of over 20 million euros.
Furthermore, Octavio López has confirmed that all this planning will be compiled into a document that will define Aragon’s logistics strategy for the next 15 years. Its final presentation is scheduled for September under the title “Strategic Logistics Plan for Aragon 2025-2040 .”
